We’ve all been there: sleepy eyed from the long drive through traffic, trudging through airport security with barely a sock to hold onto–only to have to frantically pack laptop bags, belts, wallets, cell phones and shoes back together again and hope nothing was lost in the scramble. It’s not surprising for most people to come up with more than a few vexing pet peeves from commercial flying.


  1. Too Many People!: From driving in circles for parking, shuffling through security and finding it impossible to find a chair to sit in as you wait at the gate for your plane, the “people” problem at the airport is enough to lose hair over. You swear your seat is smaller than it used to be as your neighbor boldly claims the armrest and forces you out of your chair time and again as they make a few trips to the restroom.


  2. Lines & Time: Your airport is HOW far away from your home or destination? After you add up the extra hours driving, finding parking or requesting a lift you’ve already added a draining commute to the beginning of a long trip through the airport itself–just to get to your plane! After landing, everyone in the plane stands up to rush out the door, on their way to baggage claim.


  3. Why is My Chair Smaller?: Is everything at the commercial airport shrinking?! Smaller seats, stricter baggage size limitations, smaller overhead compartments–the only thing that doesn’t seem to shrink is the price of your ticket! Watch out for bruising when the passenger ahead reclines his seat into your knees, your carry-on is stuffed into your legroom and the passenger next to carries their baby or even pet in their lap.


  4. Baggage That Gets too Personal: There’s always that one passenger on the plane who insists on combatting the stewards to allow his oversized carry-on aboard. Unfortunately, not only does your regular flight not have large enough storage space to fit bulky items, but many don’t have enough room even for the carry-on you now have to pay for to take on the plane! After you’re forced to check your bags, be glad if they aren’t lost, damaged, or take more than an hour to show up in baggage claim.


  5. Rules, Rules, Rules: It seems like a distant memory the days where you could pass through security without worrying about a misplaced shampoo bottle or a suspicious looking kid’s toy. Now you have to pay for your carry-on’s, seat placement, and pocket sized in-flight snacks, and the size of your luggage is a work of pure origami. After your once friendly front staff pushes you off to a glitching, uppity machine you’re hardly left any patience to wonder why anyone thought flight was enjoyable.
